Surface Preparation - Magnesium

Pretreatment for Magnesium

Alodine (Chromic Acid Solution)

Operators should be equipped with rubber gloves, aprons and goggles to avoid contact with the solution. For spray application, a respirator must be worn. Clean equipment thoroughly after use. Acid resistant (plastic, rubber and stainless steel) containers should be used.

Degrease the magnesium with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or Endura EX-2C thinner to remove any foreign material. Use a nylon scuff pad with solvent to scuff the magnesium surface. Do not use methyl alcohol (methanol)

Apply to an area of about 1-2 square meters (10.75-20 sq. ft.) using a soft brush or mop. Start at the bottom and work up to minimize streaks. Allow solution to remain on the surface for 2-3 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with clean cold water. Continue until the entire surface is cleaned. Any seams, crevices or rivet areas should be blown dry with clean compressed air.

Prime with Endura EP-PA primer within 8 hours. Otherwise repeat the above process.
