Pretreatment for Aluminum (thin wall)

Degreaser 10 and MetaLink

Degrease surface

  • Scrub surface with Degreaser 10 for 5 – 10 minutes before rinsing off with clean water
  • Apply MetaLink to the dry surface
  • Do not rinse off the MetaLink. Allow to dry for 1 – 2 hours before applying Primer.

Sanding aluminum before the application of Endura MetaLink removes oxidation and exposes the active aluminum surface. Endura MetaLink adheres tenaciously to the active aluminum surface. The prepared surface must not be wiped, washed or wetted in any way after sanding and before application of MetaLink. The active sites in the aluminum are exposed by sanding, these active sites will be neutralized if contacted by ANY liquid (solvent or water based products) and eliminates the opportunity of Endura MetaLink to bond to the aluminum. If aluminum surface is wetted after sanding and prior to MetaLink application ADHESION FAILURE will occur.

Blowing sanding dust from the surface with clean compressed air is all that is allowed. Washing aluminum surfaces with soapy water/degreasers/solvent PRIOR to sanding is desirable and effective for proper surface preparation.

Pretreatment for Aluminum (thin wall)

Degrease the aluminum with Degreaser 10, Endura EX-2C Thinner or Endura high strength gun wash (do not use generic gun wash products or wax and grease remover) to remove any oil or paint stripper residue. Use a scuff pad with the solvent to scuff the aluminum surface. Rinse well with water to remove solvent residue before application of Endura Aluminum Cleaner.

Aluminum Cleaner:

Apply the diluted Endura Aluminum Cleaner to an area of about 1m – 2m (10 – 20ft) using a soft brush or mop. Start at the bottom and work up to minimize streaks. Allow solution to remain on the surface for no more than 5 minutes. Do not allow product to dry on surface. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Water should drain off without any signs of a water break or water beading (areas showing water break or water beading must be redone). Continue until entire surface is cleaned. Any seams, crevices or rivet areas should be blown dry with clean compressed air.

Prepare Aluminum Conversion Coating by dissolving 100 grams (4 oz) of Alodine 1200S in 4 litres of water. Application of the coating solution is carried out in the same manner as above. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.The prepared should have a light iridescent gold or tan color.

Alodine:

Apply to an area of about 1-2 square meters (10.75-20 sq. ft.) using a soft brush or mop. Start at the bottom and work up to minimize streaks. Allow solution to remain on the surface for 2-3 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with clean cold water. Continue until the entire surface is cleaned. Any seams, crevices or rivet areas should be blown dry with clean compressed air.

Pretreatment for Aluminum (thick wall)

Sandblasting

Aluminum surfaces Sandblasted (Thick Wall) designated for painting can be grit blasted as per Steel Structures Painting Counsel SSPC-SP6 Commercial Blast cleaning. Removal of a high profile on sandblasted aluminum by scuffing with 80 – 100 grit sandpaper is recommended prior to application of primer.
